Okay guys I need your help. I think I jinxed myself thinking I felt pretty good with only 4 weeks left to go and no major injuries. Next year I will learn to keep my mouth shut!!! ANYWAY... the Sunday after the Earth Day 1/2 my ankle was swollen - and still is. I may have made the mistake of trying to do the long run on Saturday because it hurts even worse (went from dull pain to shooting pain) today. Before I do anymore running I think I should see someone to find out what the heck is going on. I tried to do some research but now I am even more confused if its a sprain, strain, or stress fracture and the recovery time for all of them doesnt sound good beings the race is less than 3 weeks away. :( I know you all have mentioned doctors in the past to go to so I'm looking for some advice.
Thanks!

Good morning, Heidi Ho! Go today to Orthopedics Associates. They'll do x-rays. You may be fine from now until race day. You just need to know what the heck's going on in there. There's still hope, so don't get too down yet. I'll be running the full marathon with a bum hip. My plan may need to be: run for a couple miles, walk through every water stop, run for a couple more miles. I'm counting this marathon as my fun run b/c of my hip injury. I'll probably be finishing with the 80 year olds!!! Care to join me?
Kathleen
Heidi - Sorry to hear about the injury. I agree with Kathleen go into the doctor and make sure nothing is broke. I ran last years marathon with my stress fracture in my foot. Ice, heat and biofreeze all were helpful. My orthordics have made a world of difference for me. It was last year this time when all the injuries starting making their ugly appearances, I think the long run stress our bodies:-) Good luck!!!
Okay Kathleen, I took your advice and went to Orthopaedic Associates and had some xrays done. I have exterior tibial tendonitis. So that is good news. I will still be able to run on the 19th, but need to cut way back on my miles and do a lot of cross training. There is something funky going on with the left side of my body (I have trouble with my left knee and left shoulder too) so he suggested physical therapy and orthotics (sp). which I dont know if I will look into before the 19th or not. I thought running would be an inexpensive hobby!!!! Anyway, just wanted to give you an update!!!!! Thanks Kathleen for the advice, and if it doesnt get any better I will join you and the 80 year olds!
Heidi
Heidi--
I think both Leah and Kathleen would also send you to Dr. Thumbs---maybe just a quick little adjust would help with your bad left side---guess you know for sure now that you are in your RIGHT mind!!!
Rest, Ice and Ibuprophen on that tendonitis---see you at the starting line, girly!!!
Heidi,
This is the exact same thing that happened to me last year. (Same time frame too!) REST, REST, REST. I ran w/ pain for 2 weeks, then I stopped running all together. I did not run one step for the 2 weeks right before the marathon. After the marathon, I went in for orthotics and have not had a problem since. It's so mentally hard not to run, but you have to let yourself heal.
Good Luck!
JG
Hang in there Heidi! "Listen to your body" as opposed to "run thru the pain". I'd suggest a gait analysis with Al Kraft at MeritCare Southpointe. $40 and he videotapes (yes, my butt is on the Internet) your stride from all angles. Also tests your strength. I learned that a hip strength imbalance was causing my IT Band pain. Gave me exercises to correct and it's worked.

Heidi... glad you went to get it checked out. I agree with everyone...rest, rest, rest. This is the time when injuries creep up. Hang in there!!
