OK. So, I don't have a picture to post, which is a huge bummer. Here's why: I listened intently (Ann did, too. You all know Ann...the nice one), as these eager women runners told of their prescription for pain and inflammation, after completing long runs. They sit in a tub of ice water for up to 15 minutes. Our eyes kept meeting with wonderment and surprise, or maybe "wonderment and confusion" would be more appropriate, as we tried to understand how they physically "do it."
I ordered my 24 oz latte and hurried home with reserved anticipation.
I did what I was told: put only cold water in the tub, dumped the ice cube dispenser tray into the tub, undressed from the waist down, bundled up with two fleece coats and my winter hat/scarf/face mask wrap (pulled all the way down for extra warmth, of course...everyone knows you lose most of your body's heat through your head). I placed my PEOPLE magazine and coffee next to the tub, for convenience. Since I'm going to be in there for 15 minutes, I might as well have something fun to read and hot to sip on!
It still looked daunting to me, so I added an extra treat. I thought it might be more inviting with some bubbles. I poured half a jug of HELLO KITTY bubbles in, held my breath and slid in.
HOLY CRAP! My toes were becoming frost-bitten (nearly fell off, far as I cold tell), and ice cubes were sliding in places they have never been, and clearly don't belong.
I lasted only 1 minute. I'd rather (and still might have to) get my hip replaced. I won't ever forget this experience. I'm in awe of you ICE WHORS.
HELLO KITTY and I are taking another approach. After icing my hip earlier, we're taking a nice, hot bath together tonight (Drew's giving a speech in Grand Forks, so HK's my date in the tub).
Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Geez Kathleen, it's only 10 minutes that you are to subject yourself to that torture. Obviously we don't need to worry about any S&M things happening during all your pink miles....You do have to share this story with fellow runners the next time we run together......FUNNY STORY! I actually did ok for my TEN minutes....
Show off...
oh that was so funny...I too tried the ice bath with my cup of tea and Forum crossword at my side but I kept my tights ON. The mental of image of Kathleen nakey from the waist down, bundled to the max on top, with ice cubes converging on her woohoo brought tears to my eyes (that would be tears of laughter). I now know what my goal is...to be able to run as fast as Kathleen so I can enjoy her stories with the rest! (Kathleen, you should write humorous columns for Runners World!)
Special K! You are too much! I'm going to have to try bubbles next time! This time I actually put my socks back on.....what a sight! My dh just laughs (and takes pictures)....I sit in the tub and I have my little yoga block as a foot stool so I can lift my toes out of the water but keep my arch, heels and calves submerged and put my socks back on over my toes. Of course with my stocking cap, two wool sweaters and gloves...the socks are just icing on the cake!
Maybe that's where I went wrong...socks. I thought my front bottom and my toes were frost-bitten. I'm heading back to Dr. "Thumbs" tomorrow, for the ole hip.
See you for 8, at 6, at Courts.
PS You must post some of those pictures.

OMG!! You guys what are you doing to yourselves. I tried the ice bath too...but just with straigh cold water & NO ICE! I kept standing up and sitting back down... when I went down - I had my legs hanging over the edge of the tub. I have to ask an honest question... are you really suppose to bundle up with clothing on top?? I just can't imagine!!
Special K and Ann - your stories are delightful!!
Ohhhh ... I am still trying to figure this blogging stuff out. The last post was me...GiGi. (I think I used the wrong account!)
WOW...did I need that tonight! The visual WITH the bubbles, is just too much! As an advocate of the ice bath, I have to admit I scream and groan uncontrollably for the first 1-2 minutes, with an audience of 2 little ones wondering why I'm using the ice cubes they need for their choc milk in my bath. My motivation is my 3-yr old telling me I only have to wait for 5 more ice cubes to melt before I can get out. Toes are the worst, and socks are a good tip I'm going to try. After 1-2 minutes, everything goes numb.
